Sciatica

Sciatica is caused by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve usually where at originates from the lumbar spine. Sciatica can be a distracting pain that starts in the lower back and extends down into one or both legs. There are five nerve roots that branch off of the spinal cord to form the large sciatic nerves.

Irritation or pinching the sciatic nerve is most likely caused by either a disc herniation, spinal stenosis, degenerative changes, spinal misalignment or a combination of the above. Chiropractic treatment offers a more conservative approach to treating sciatic pain than dangerous irreversible surgery. Herniated or bulging discs are one of the most common causes of sciatica. Disc herniations are usually caused by gradual wear and tear that leads to weakening of the disc and finally it bulges and then herniates. Sciatic pain can also be caused by a muscle spasm of the piriformis muscle in the hip area. Dr. Krift can determine the cause of the sciatic pain and recommend a treatment plan that may include chiropractic adjustments to relieve the nerve pressure, low level laser therapy to reduce inflammation and stimulate healing. Flexion-distraction treatment is also helpful in getting pressure of of a herniated disc. An MRI may be ordered to further evaluate the cause of your sciatic pain.
